Nashville’s reputation as Music City began over a hundred years ago and to this day, still brings tourists in from every corner of the world to a music scene that is an integral part of the city’s soul. There are now more than one hundred and thirty venues in and around the center, plus an array of music recording and production companies, which together yield a notable part of its economy. Over the years, as Nashville embraced all genres of music, including jazz, blue and rock, the city attracted increasing numbers of big name singers and groups, with today’s chart toppers still visiting to record their music here.
Everyone from Jimi Hendrix to Etta James and from Kid Rock to Bon Jovi has, at some point or another, performed in Music City.Nashville has also long been recognized as the songwriting capital of the world, with writers traveling from far and wide to perform their original tracks and mix with others to jam and share their musical passion. The annual Tin Pan South Songwriters Festival also showcases new talent here and allows hundreds of musicians to perform, sometimes for the first time, in public every year. There are two main areas of Nashville where the live music scene is particularly dominant – midtown and downtown, the latter of which is home to the notorious Broadway strip.
Every night, the city is awash with the vibrant sounds of bands and musicians, from newcomers and locals to the more experienced established acts that play here on a regular basis. While the journey between midtown and downtown is a short cab ride (around $6 one way), once you arrive in either area, every venue is within walking distance. In fact, many are situated door to door, making it easier to wander between them until you stumble on a bar or a band that grabs your attention.
Very few venues have a cover charge for the most part, so it is easy to pop in for a beer and catch a set before moving on to the next. There is a shared and familiar atmosphere among them, driven forward by those performing on stage, and supported by those working behind the bar. So whether you like old country style, honky tonk or something a little more current, you will never be short of choice for entertainment on a night out in Music City.
